This is a prototype for a wedding ring. I love the symbolism of the Möbius band in a wedding ring: the two sides of the metal turning into one seems to me to be a metaphor for marriage in many ways.

This is the first in a series of Möbius bands I am creating. Its pure simplicity accents the symbolism of the ring design. Please see a gold version that I have made to replace a wedding band that wore out.

For this band I started with heavy round sterling wire and rolled it in a rolling mill to flatten it. I left it fairly heavy, though, since I wanted some mass on the top of the twist. The cross section is rectangular with rounded ends, which I thought would look more graceful and wear better than a hard-edged shape. I made the twist- annealling several times- and cut the band to a blank length for a size 7.5 ring, knowing the extra effective thickness of the twisted part would result in a smaller size. And smaller it was! The final ring is size 5.5!

The fabrication went somewhat more smoothly and easily than I had anticipated, but the finishing was harder than I'd thought. There were some persistent tooling marks left from making such heavy stock into such a small ring; also, the twisting and forming processes cause some distortion in the shape of the twist, and I smoothed these out while prepolishing. The final polish is a very high-shine finish.

Sterling silver.
