One traditional engagement ring combined the birthstones of the bride and groom- or sometimes the stones symbolizing the months of their parents' weddings. I've set these asymmetrically, and added 3 small "diamonds" for a more contemporary version.

This woud also make a wonderful mother's ring, since the number of stones used can be adapted.
